The film The Road (Yol), directed by Şerif Gören, whose screenplay was written by Yılmaz Güney, was awarded with the Palme d’Or at the 1982 Cannes Film Festival. The film addresses the situations that five prisoners coming out of prison encounter “outside”.

The film, in which these five stories are linked by dramatic cross-editing, is based on the idea that being in or out of prison does not prevent being convicted. The pressure of customs, the desperation caused by economic and social conditions, and the cruelty of life can sometimes turn the outside world into a prison worse than a real prison. The main factor that determines the captivity of the society inside or outside the walls is “the loss of belief in freedom and the devaluation of the idea of freedom.
